Navigating Chaos: 10 Practices to Thrive in a Troubled World

Extreme Stress
Extreme Stress

I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel when the structures we once trusted begin to crumble and the media seems determined to keep us locked in a state of perpetual fear. Regardless of where you stand politically, I’ve noticed that our news feeds are more about keeping us anxious than offering balanced insights. In my journey, I’ve discovered several practices that help me reclaim my peace and focus on what truly matters. Here are ten practices that have made a difference in my life:

1. Embrace the Serenity Prayer

When external forces become too much to bear, I turn to the timeless wisdom of the Serenity Prayer. It reminds me to accept what I cannot change and find the strength to transform what I can. I recite it to center myself:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.

This prayer isn’t just words—it’s a daily reminder that while I can’t control everything, I can choose my attitude and actions.

2. Practice Mindfulness Meditation

I’ve found that carving out even a few minutes each day for mindfulness meditation can be incredibly grounding. It helps me observe my thoughts without judgment and creates a space where I can let go of the chaos around me.

3. Limit Media Consumption

One of my biggest lessons has been learning that when I’m overly involved in other people’s business, no one is at home tending to mine. I’ve come to understand that binge-watching biased news programs only fuels my anxiety. Instead, I set boundaries around my media consumption, opting for curated, fact-based sources and scheduled breaks from the digital world.

4. Engage in Physical Exercise

Regular physical activity is a non-negotiable part of my routine. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a run, or a yoga session, exercise helps release endorphins and clear my mind, making it easier to cope with daily stress.

A practice that has truly transformed my approach to stress is red light therapy. I use whole-body pods—our unique and effective pods—to bathe in red light, which supports brain function and reduces stress. The science behind it is compelling: red light wavelengths penetrate deep into the skin, stimulating cellular repair and improving mitochondrial function. For me, this not only helps in reducing inflammation but also enhances my mood and cognitive performance, providing a calming counterbalance to the relentless noise of the world.

6. Connect with Nature

Stepping outside and immersing myself in nature is another essential practice. Whether it’s a quiet park or a hike in the woods, nature has an uncanny way of restoring my sense of balance and perspective, reminding me that life continues beyond the headlines.

7. Cultivate Gratitude

I make it a habit to jot down moments of gratitude. Focusing on what I appreciate—small or significant—shifts my perspective away from fear and anxiety. This practice has helped me build resilience and a more positive outlook.

8. Create a Personal Sanctuary

I’ve learned that taking care of my inner world is just as important as managing the external one. Creating a dedicated space in my home for reflection, creativity, or relaxation has become my personal sanctuary—a place where I can disconnect from the turmoil and reconnect with myself.

9. Engage in Creative Outlets

Creative expression, whether it’s writing, painting, or playing music, allows me to process my emotions in a constructive way. It’s not about perfection but about the freedom to express and understand my inner world without judgment.

10. Practice Self-Compassion and Set Boundaries

Lastly, I remind myself daily that I deserve kindness—especially from myself. Recognizing that I cannot fix everything or control every outcome has been liberating. Setting clear boundaries for my time and energy, particularly regarding what I allow into my mental space, has been key in preserving my well-being.

In these turbulent times, it’s easy to feel swallowed by fear and uncertainty. But by anchoring myself in these practices, I’ve found a way to navigate the chaos and maintain my inner peace. Each practice is a tool—a reminder that while the world may be in flux, I have the power to choose how I respond. Take what resonates with you and remember: peace begins with you.
