Red Light Therapy Benefits: Does Red Light Therapy Really Work?

Red Light Therapy - Is It Science or Scam?

If you have Googled red light therapy lately, you are definitely not alone.

Red light therapy has exploded in popularity. Masks. Panels. Belts. Saunas. Beds. Pods. You can now find some version of red light therapy almost everywhere.

And with all that popularity comes a very reasonable question:

Does red light therapy actually work?

The answer is not, “It cures everything.”

It also isn't, “It's just a red light.”

The science is much more interesting than either of those answers.

First, What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is also called photobiomodulation, or PBM.

It uses specific wavelengths of red and near infrared light to interact with cells and influence biological processes.

One of the primary areas researchers continue to study is the effect light may have on mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are involved in producing ATP, the energy cells use to function.

That does not mean red light magically gives you energy like an energy drink.

It means we are working much farther upstream, at the cellular level.

And THAT is why researchers are interested in photobiomodulation for so many different applications.

Not all red light is the same.

In fact, much of what is being sold today is little more than glowing red light with marketing wrapped around it.

Red is a color. Photobiomodulation is a technology.

At The Wellness Center, we use medical quality Regen Q8 full body pods designed to deliver specific researched red and near infrared wavelengths at 630/633, 810, 850, and 940 nanometers. Those wavelengths matter. Coverage matters. Intensity matters. Design matters. A cheap bulb, beauty gadget, or decorative LED panel may shine red, but that does not make it equivalent to a medical quality photobiomodulation system. When people assume all red light is the same, they miss one very important truth:

The results are only as good as the technology behind the light.

What Are the Most Common Red Light Therapy Benefits?

This is where I want to separate research from internet hype.

There are areas where the research is encouraging.

There are areas where the research is early.

And there are claims floating around online that have raced FAR ahead of the evidence.

At The Wellness Center, we would rather tell you the truth than sell you a miracle.

Pain and Inflammation

This is one of the areas that continues to receive significant attention.

Photobiomodulation has been studied for musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, tendon problems and other inflammatory conditions.

A systematic review involving people with knee osteoarthritis found that photobiomodulation reduced pain compared with placebo, although researchers also cautioned that the certainty of the evidence was very low and more rigorous studies are needed.

Translation?

Promising. Not magic. Worth continuing to study.

And that happens to describe a lot of photobiomodulation research very well.

Muscle Recovery and Exercise

This area is particularly interesting.

A 2025 systematic review and meta analysis found that photobiomodulation used before exercise reduced muscle soreness and improved some measures of performance during recovery.

The researchers also rated some of that evidence as low certainty, which matters.

Another 2025 review examining delayed onset muscle soreness found improvements in pain and muscle strength at certain points during recovery.

So when athletes tell us they feel like they recover differently after using the pods, there is legitimate research asking some of those same questions.

Sleep

Now this one caught my attention.

A 2026 systematic review and meta analysis looked at randomized controlled trials involving photobiomodulation and sleep.

The pooled results suggested an improvement in sleep quality compared with sham treatment.

Interesting result.

Keep studying it.

Energy and Fatigue

People frequently walk out of our pods and tell us they feel energized.

Others feel incredibly relaxed.

Some want to take a nap.

Why the difference?

Because human beings are complicated.

Research into PBM and fatigue is developing. One systematic review found that photobiomodulation may help fatigue recovery in healthy individuals, while it did not consistently improve strength or overall functional performance.

Again, there is a big difference between saying:

“Research is investigating cellular energy and fatigue.”

and

“Red light will give everyone more energy.”

We prefer the first one.

What About Red Light Therapy for Weight Loss?

Oh boy.

Google loves this question. (That means people love to ask this question!)

So let's talk about it.

There are studies showing changes in body circumference or fat related measurements following some forms of low level light therapy.

However, the research is inconsistent, relatively small and does NOT support treating red light therapy as a replacement for nutrition, activity or medically appropriate weight management.

Even recent medical reviews describe the evidence as mixed and still developing.

So no.

You cannot lie in a red light pod for 20 minutes while eating donuts and expect your mitochondria to negotiate with the calories.

Wouldn't that be fabulous?

What is nice is that it is emerging as a credible tool in your weight managment. And that's nice.

Then Why Do We Use Full Body Red and Near Infrared Light?

Because the human body isn't a collection of disconnected parts.

Our Regen Q8 pods use multiple wavelengths of red and near infrared light across the entire body.

Rather than shining a little device on one knee, shoulder or patch of skin, our clients receive a full body photobiomodulation session.

That is an important distinction because much of the historical research on photobiomodulation has involved localized treatment.

We aren't going to pretend the research is farther along than it is.

Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Here is my answer.

It depends on what you mean by “work.”

If someone tells you red light therapy cures every disease, melts fat, fixes every hormone, eliminates depression, detoxifies your body and reverses aging...

Run. FAST

Preferably while your mitochondria are functioning beautifully.

But if someone tells you photobiomodulation is a fascinating and rapidly developing area of research involving cellular function, pain, inflammation, recovery, skin, sleep and several other biological processes...

Now we can have an intelligent conversation.

Even Cleveland Clinic describes red light therapy as an emerging treatment showing promise for some applications while emphasizing that many proposed uses still need much stronger research.

That is where we stand too.

One Session or Consistency?

This may be the least exciting answer on Google:

Consistency matters.

Red light therapy isn't generally something we evaluate based on one visit.

At The Wellness Center, when someone is using photobiomodulation toward a particular wellness goal, we generally encourage completing a consistent course rather than bouncing randomly between sessions and protocols.

Our typical starting course is 12 sessions, often beginning around three visits per week and then adjusting into maintenance based on the individual.

Some people notice changes quickly.

Some notice subtle changes.

Some notice nothing. And that is RARE.

That is biology.

And That Is Why We Built The Wellness Center

We aren't interested in selling hype.

We ARE interested in technology that may help the body function better.

We are interested in research.

We are interested in what happens when people use photobiomodulation consistently rather than occasionally.

We have over 22,000 sessions under our belt. Anecdotal? Absolutely and also it means something! We are on the forefront of this technology and have been for 5 years. I think our opinion might carry some weight....the good kind of weight. ;-)

Red light therapy isn't a miracle.

But it certainly isn't “just a red light” either.

And science is nowhere near finished asking questions about it.

Curious about full body red light therapy?

Come experience it for yourself at The Wellness Center in South Ogden or Huntsville, Utah.

Your first paid session is $39, and if you decide to purchase a membership, we will apply that $39 toward your membership.

Already part of our Wellness Center family?

Remember, you can refer a friend or family member for their first session FREE and YOU get a free session as well!

Because sometimes the best way to understand what all the red light fuss is about...

is to climb into the pod.
